This video shows the current state of the PicoDMZ project: a Nintendo Game Boy DMG rebuilt around RP2040/RP2350 hardware while preserving as much of the original hardware and feel as possible.

What you see in the video:

  • Original Game Boy shell and buttons
  • Original DMG-LCD-06 button board reuse
  • AA battery powered
  • RP2040/RP2350-based emulation
  • NFC-based cartridge loading system
  • ST7789 TFT display
  • Custom DMG-style boot animation and startup sound

Two original Game Boy cartridges are scanned and used to load their corresponding ROMs from microSD, recreating the physical interaction of swapping cartridges while using modern embedded hardware internally.

⚠️ Turn audio on — the custom startup sequence includes a recreated boot sound inspired by the original Game Boy.

This project started as a simple proof of concept and somehow escalated into:
“Let’s build a Game Boy.”
